Speaking after the race, McIntosh said:
“Upon entering this evening, I knew that my training had been really good in recent months and I knew I could do something special,” she said. “Being able to put this training in the race, I mean, I didn’t think it would result in a 54.1, but I’m really happy with that overall.”
“To be honest, I didn’t really feel much pain in this race. I felt so strong throughout and this is never the case in the 400 Freestyle for me. These last 100, I usually hurt really. But I returned the 200 and I was just cruising. I knew that I was swimming hard and that I could say it by the crowd and the way they encouraged that I was probably close to the world record, so I really tried to push this last part for them. “”
