Summer 2.0? Ontario’s Heat Is Back in Force

We may have had to wait until mid-September, but we’re finally going to enjoy some of the nicest summer weather of the season across much of Eastern Canada.

A significant change in the pattern will bring unseasonable warmth to Ontario and Quebec over the coming week and beyond. Temperatures will easily climb into the 20s in most communities, with some reaching the 30s.

But there is a potential catch in the upcoming pattern that forecasters are watching closely.

September Outlook: Summer Is Not Over Yet in Canada

A large crest brings unusual warmth for the season

The first snow of the year fell on northeastern Ontario on Saturday as a cold system swept across the Great Lakes.

That will be a distant memory this week, as a formidable ridge of high pressure is expected to form over the eastern half of Canada this week, as part of a major pattern change occurring across the country.

This change will be influenced by the remnants of Super Typhoon Yagi in the western Pacific Ocean, as well as a deep trough over eastern Siberia.

DON’T MISS: Super typhoon could soon bring midsummer heat to Canada

These features on the other side of the world will disrupt the upper level configuration in such a way that we will see a pronounced trough develop over western Canada, which will reinforce the large ridge that is developing to the east.

The ridges promote descending air, which warms as it sinks toward the surface. We’ll see this warmth in abundance over the coming week, as temperatures will feel more like early August than mid-September.

The heat will arrive in earnest on Wednesday, as daytime highs will climb to 25 to 30 degrees across Ontario, not just in southern Ontario, but also for folks up north around Sudbury and Timmins, where the heat will start a day earlier on Tuesday.

Ontario Temperature Forecast Wednesday

We could see high temperatures climb into the 30s in far southwestern Ontario, around Windsor, London and perhaps even into the Greater Toronto Area at times.

While heat will take over the region, it won’t be a wet quagmire like we’ve seen so often this season. We’ll see little precipitation as this ridge sits overhead. A relative lack of moisture will allow for warm, sunny days with comfortable, low nighttime temperatures.

A potential wild card lurks in the Gulf

A tropical disturbance attempting to develop in the southern Gulf of Mexico could change everything by next weekend.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) estimates that the disturbance has a 70 percent chance of strengthening into a tropical storm this week as it lingers over the region’s moist waters.

MUST SEE: Hurricane Remnants Could Bring Dangerous Weather to Canada

Some models suggest this system could track high-level toward southern Ontario by the end of next week, but confidence in this scenario is very low at this time. It is, however, worth monitoring for any potential increase in moisture or precipitation that could accompany a track toward our side of the border.
