Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu is a four time MLA for Nadaun in Hamirpur

New Delhi:
Congress Leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will be sworn in today as the seventh Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Mr. Sukhu, Member of Parliament for Nadaun in Hamirpur District, Hill State, headed the Congressional Campaign Committee for the recently held state elections.

Here are the top 10 facts about this great story

  1. Mr Sukhu, 58, was chosen by the Congress high command for the top job amid intense lobbying by Pratibha Singh, a congresswoman and wife of the former chief minister and congress veteran, late Virbhadra Singh. He will be sworn in today at 11 a.m.

  2. Claiming the post of chief minister, Ms Singh said Congress had contested and won the election on Virbhadra Singh’s behalf, and it would be “a disaster” to sideline his family.

  3. But, according to party sources, she does not enjoy the support of the party’s 40 newly elected MPs and that has hurt her prospects.

  4. Following the high command’s decision to select Mr Sukhu, Ms Singh told reporters last night that she accepted the decision. MPs previously asked the Congress high command to select the leader of the legislative party, who will also be the chief minister.

  5. Mr Sukhu, a former state congress speaker known to be close to party leader Rahul Gandhi, did not have a good working relationship with six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh, who died last year.

  6. A four-time MLA, Mr. Sukhu is the son of a bus driver and began his political career on the campus of Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla. He then led the State Unit of the Student Wing of Congress and gradually rose through the ranks.

  7. His ordinary background, which stands in stark contrast to Virbhadra Singh’s royal lineage, helped him build the image of a self-taught leader who worked at all levels of the party for four decades.

  8. Mr. Sukhu, who is a lawyer by training, is considered a member of the Rahul team. The choice of worker-turned-ruler over royal heirs is also an appropriate message from Congress at a time when Mr Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” has grassroots work as its key theme.

  9. Mukesh Agnihotri, also a candidate for chief minister and a protege of Virbhadra Singh, was chosen for the post of deputy chief minister in a balancing act by Congress.

  10. While Pratibha Singh is the state congresswoman, her son Vikramaditya Singh could also land a senior cabinet post as the high command tries to appease them.
