At least 300 people were saved Thursday following a powerful explosion of clouds which sparked floods and landslides, but the operation was interrupted during the night. Officials said many people who have disappeared would have been swept away and that the number of missing could increase.

Resident Harvinder Singh said he joined rescue efforts immediately after the disaster and helped recover 33 bodies from the mud.

At least 50 seriously injured people were treated in hospitals, many of which have been saved from a stream filled with mud and debris.

Chositi, in the Kishtwar district of Kashmir, is the last village accessible to motor vehicles on the road from an annual Hindu pilgrimage to an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,500 feet). The officials said that the pilgrimage, which started on July 25 and was to end on September 5, was suspended.

Region struck by several floods in recent weeks

Pakistan Gilgit-Baltistan region Was hit by several floods since July, triggering landslides along the Karakoram motorway, a commercial and key travel route connecting Pakistan and China that tourists use to go to the picturesque North. The region houses picturesque glaciers that provide 75% of Pakistan’s stored water supply.

During the summer, when schools are closed for more than two months, hundreds of thousands of people go to picturesque destinations in north and northwest Pakistan. This year, despite repeated government warnings on landslides and sudden floods, many have still visited popular stations in the areas affected by floods.

The Pakistan disaster management agency has published new alerts for the explosion of the glacial lake in the North, warning travelers to avoid affected areas.

A study published this week by global weather allocation, a network of international scientists, noted that precipitation in Pakistan from June 24 to July 23 was 10% to 15% heavier due to global warming.
