‘Stupidest thing I’ve ever seen’ – Canelo Alvarez hits back at Oscar De La Hoya as pair reignite feud ahead of Jaime Munguia fight

Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya have now reignited their feud.

De La Hoya promoted Canelo until a bitter breakup in 2020, when the fighter was granted free agency.

The two have exchanged occasional pleasantries since that split, but have mostly avoided each other in recent years.

However, there was an awkward reunion between them last month.

Canelo has now signed to fight Jaime Munguia in his next fight on May 4.

Munguia is co-promoted by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, alongside Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran’s Zanfer Promotions.

While Canelo’s representatives instead negotiated with Beltran, De La Hoya is still involved in Munguia’s career and therefore attended the first press conference.

There was no enmity on stage, but that changed once De La Hoya took to social media the next day.

He tweeted: “Yesterday’s press conference was as boring as Canelo’s fights. Wait until I vent.”

When asked about this, Canelo replied LA Times Spanish: “If he doesn’t have the courage to say it at the press conference, his own fighter Munguia is in the fight and he is saying this about a press conference of his own fighter.

“I think it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, and that’s what Oscar is.

“Oscar only relies on stupid words and that’s why people pay attention to him.

“But in his company, he just talks nonsense, that’s all he does, that’s all he knows how to do.”

Other exchanges should follow before the May 4 fight.

Canelo was also asked about fans’ demands for him to fight David Benavidez.

“The truth is I’ve always fought who people say I don’t want to fight,” he responded.

“I’m in a position that I’ve earned, where I can do whatever I want.

“At the end of the day, I won’t please them with anything. When they wanted me to fight Gennady Golovkin, I fought Golovkin.

“Callum Smith, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather, Austin Trout, everyone.

“So if you look at it, they’re never satisfied with anything. I’ll do what I want.”
