GKIDS, the North American Studio Films Distributor, uses a declaration of the box office for a reissue of “Princess Mononoke” to perhaps make an oblique comment on the recent version of an AI tool which reproduces the style of the emblematic animation studio.
A new 4K restoration from the 1997 Ghibli Classic studio “Princess Mononoke”, by Hayao Miyazaki, was on Thursday on IMAX on 330 screens. The animated functionality made $ 1.2 million in preview before its Friday opened, according to GKIDS. In a statement, Chance Huskey, vice-president of distribution for GKIDS, said: “At a time when technology is trying to reproduce humanity, we are delighted that the public appreciates a theatrical experience that respects and famous Hayao Miyazaki and the masterpiece of studio Ghibli in all its cinematographic cinematographic glory.”
The statement comes just one day after Openai launched its latest image generation technology, which quickly became viral while users began to apply the legendary studio style to their vacation snapshots and their family portraits. But many in the animation and creative communities have spoken out against the idea that the art of animation which takes time to be replaced by an automated and anonymous technology.
Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, previously expressed a strong disapproval of the animation generated by AI. At a 2016 meeting where an AI animation demo was shown, Miyazaki said: “I am completely disgusted. If you really want to do scary stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never want to incorporate this technology into my work. ” He also said: “I strongly think that it is an insult to life itself.”
In an interview Variety,, Akihiko Yamashita, who spent almost two years working as a supervisor in the Studio Studio film “Howl’s Mov Castle”, explained the animation process of Miyazaki. “He is someone who really takes shape. From the layout to the storyboards – everything – he draws him himself. And let’s say that a key animator has drawn an animation. If he does not like it, then he will change it and draw an approximate drawing. Then, the key animators and the other animators must bring this to the final scene.” Yamashita added: “I really have no idea of the number of drawing pages or the number of cels that we have drawn. I just know that we worked a lot and we pulled a huge amount.”
Hollywood actors and other creatives have expressed concerns about OpenAi’s efforts and other artificial intelligence companies to “weaken or eliminate” protections on copyright -protected works for the training of AI systems. In the comments filed with the Trump administration science and technological office at the beginning of the month, more than 400 filmmakers, actors, musicians and others opposed what they said that Lobbying by Openai and Google “for a special government exemption so that they can freely exploit the creative industries and knowledge of America”.
