Strong-to-severe thunderstorms possible in Illinois, Indiana Tuesday – NBC Chicago

While the threat of snow appears in the forecast for the Chicago area, parts of the region could actually experience strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon.

According to forecast models, these storms could develop in areas south of Interstate 80, including parts of Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties.

Almost all of northwest Indiana could also be exposed to strong to severe storms, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts of up to 50 to 60 miles per hour could occur with the storms, as well as heavy downpours and quarter-sized hail, officials said. The timing of the storms could carry them through the area around 4 p.m., according to forecast models.

A special weather statement has already been issued for parts of LaSalle County as thunderstorms begin to roll in, according to the NWS.

As colder air moves into the region, rain could eventually change to snow during the afternoon commute, especially in areas closer to Chicago. This snow could also fall early Wednesday morning, with slushy accumulations possible.
