Strong to severe storms possible again in Chicago area on Memorial Day – NBC Chicago

The Chicago area could see another round of strong to severe thunderstorms Monday, with some potentially bringing gusty winds and hail to the area.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, most of the Chicago area is at “marginal” risk of severe weather, the first of five levels the SPC uses to project the likelihood of severe storms.

The main threats from developing severe storms will be gusty winds, although hail and lightning cannot be ruled out.

The day will start under cloudy skies, with winds blowing from the northwest and cooler temperatures in the region. Highs on Monday are expected to reach the low to mid 70s, according to the NBC 5 Storm team.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon, with the greatest threat of severe weather focusing on areas of DeKalb, Kane, LaSalle, Kendall and Grundy counties. Other regions could still experience storms with gusty winds, according to forecast models.

The main serious threat will likely occur in the late afternoon and early evening.

These storms will eventually move away, but more scattered showers and storms are possible Tuesday, although they are not expected to reach severe limits in wind gusts or hail size. High temperatures will be on the cool side, struggling to reach 70 degrees in many places across the region.

This will be the last chance for rain until the weekend, with pleasant temperatures and partly to mostly sunny skies to wrap up the work week.
