Strong storms could bring flooding and strong winds south this weekend

A southern storm system today will bring rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms to parts of the Gulf Coast states, including much of Texas.

The greatest threat of heavy downpours that could cause flash flooding is across much of central and eastern Texas, extending into the Mississippi River.

In addition to a threat of flooding, some of these storms could also be severe, with the possibility of strong wind gusts and/or hail; The tornado threat is low but cannot be ruled out.

Late Saturday and early Sunday morning, storms could remain strong over the Southeast and bring gusty winds that could cause damage. Flash flooding from central Texas to central Mississippi is of greater concern Saturday night.

Total precipitation accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible across much of the region from central Texas to central Mississippi, however, up to 5 inches in some localized cases is possible. Given the saturation of some of these areas following recent storms last week, flash flooding may occur.

This is primarily a warning for agriculture, as these conditions can damage or kill sensitive vegetation. Fortunately, the planting season has just started for most farmers, so their harvests should be going well.

The warning is in effect Saturday morning only and covers all of Iowa, except two southeastern counties and parts of Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and of Illinois.

Pittsburgh and locations there in Ohio and West Virginia are under a frost watch Saturday morning, which is expected to transition to a frost warning or frost advisory in the evening and Sunday morning as temperatures there drop below zero.

While temperatures will remain cold Sunday morning, perhaps enough for additional frost or frost warnings, by Monday this area is expected to be warmer with lows only in the 40s from Minnesota to Omaha. The cold will move east, bringing temperatures into the upper 30s for Chicago this weekend, and possibly into the 30s for the Northeast starting Sunday morning.
