Storms hit Chicago with flooding and hail Monday afternoon – NBC Chicago

A series of showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit the Chicago area Monday afternoon and evening, with gusty winds, hail and heavy rain all causing significant problems.

The storms led to layovers at Midway and O’Hare airports, delaying inbound and outbound flights as heavy rain and gusty winds battered the region.

Those stops were lifted at 3 p.m. Monday, but delays are still being reported as airlines try to meet their schedules in both locations.

The storms also brought brief severe thunderstorm warnings to Will County, with gusty winds blamed on downed several power lines in Plainfield.

Dime-sized hail was also reported in several communities, including Fairmont and Lockport, according to the National Weather Service.

Observers also reported flooding on several sections of the Dan Ryan and Kennedy highways, with lanes blocked due to standing water on those roads.

Flood advisories remain in effect in central Cook County following previous rains, with southwest Kendall County and northwest Grundy County also affected by similar advisories from the National Weather Service.

This type of flooding can be expected throughout the afternoon and evening in the area, with slower showers and thunderstorms developing during these hours. Heavy rain could cause water to accumulate on roads and cause creeks and creeks to overflow, causing travel problems in the area.
