Stock futures were slightly lower Thursday evening after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P500 ended a three-day losing streak.
Futures linked to the 30-stock Dow Jones fell 17 points, or less than 0.1%. S&P 500 Futures Contracts And Nasdaq 100 Futures both fell less than 0.1%.
In extended trading, JB Hunt Transport Services slipped about 10% after fourth-quarter results missed analysts’ expectations. Former Dominion freight line the stock slipped nearly 2% in sympathy.
The S&P 500 ended Thursday’s regular session down 0.21%. Applewhich lost 4% on its worst day since August, trailed the Nasdaq Composite 0.89% less. The Dow Jones lost 68.42 points, or 0.16%. Despite these losses, all three indexes are still on track to end the week higher.
The year is already off to an uncertain start, with strong fluctuations in 10-year Treasury yield this week alone, the new Trump administration’s tariff threats and the Federal Reserve’s unclear interest rate path, Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.
“As a result, we have seen several of the early indicators that are not very favorable…we have already set a low this year that is lower than the previous December low,” he said. “Historically, whenever we have a low in the first quarter of a new year that is lower than the previous December’s low, the frequency of a gain is a toss-up – 50%. The average price change has was a very slight decline.”
Stovall added that he expects shares to trade range-bound for the near future until investors receive more clarity on the next market catalyst.
More bank profits are expected before Friday’s opening bell, including reports from State Street, Citizens’ Financial, Truist Financial And Financial regions. Traders will also be watching the latest building permits and housing starts figures.
