Stocks set to continue to rise, says Barclays

Barclays believes the shares have room to rise if the current market rally broadens.

“The April sell-off has reset long positions, and shares are on better fundamental footing following 1Q24 results, in our view,” the bank wrote in a recent note. “Against this backdrop, we believe stocks are likely to continue to rise.”

At the same time, the overweighting of technology assets has reached record levels, added strategist Venu Krishna.

Elon Musk threatens to ban Apple devices from his companies over OpenAI partnership

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Monday threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies after the iPhone maker announced it had reached a deal with OpenAI.

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, then Apple devices will be banned from my companies. This is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk said in an article on X.

Apple told CNBC that the company uses its own AI, adding that its integration with OpenAI is an optional feature.

Apple shares were down slightly in premarket trading. Tesla shares were flat.

S&P 500 still more than 12% above key moving average, says BTIG

The S&P 500 is still more than 12% above its 200-day moving average, and that’s a level above which the index historically cannot stay for long, according to BTIG.

This figure calculates the average close of the S&P 500 over the last 200 sessions. The broad index trading above this level generally means it is considered to be in an uptrend.

As it currently sits well above the 200-day average, the S&P 500 could theoretically decline without falling below this key level. The S&P 500 hit a new closing record Monday, bringing its year-to-date gain to 12.4%.

“It’s not a sell signal per se, but historically it doesn’t spend a lot of time above that threshold,” Jonathan Krinsky, chief market technician, told clients. “We remain tactically cautious here, while finding opportunistic ideas on a single name.”
