Steve McManaman claimed Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae had a ‘night to forget’ after Thomas Tuchel’s side allowed Real Madrid to come back to secure a 2-2 draw in their opening semi-final of the Champions League.

Vinicius Jnr opened the scoring at the Allianz Arena, breaking free from poor positioning from Kim before slotting the ball around Manuel Neuer into the back of the net.

Bayern hit back with a goal from Leroy Sane and a penalty from Harry Kane, but the home side failed to finish the match, with Kim conceding a penalty in the 83rd minute, bringing Rodrygo down in the box.

It was a costly mistake that allowed Vinicius Jnr to level the score 2-2 and give Madrid a lifeline ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu.

“Sloppy, so sloppy, you can’t touch him,” McManaman told TNT Sports of Kim’s lack of discipline inside the penalty area.

The TNT Sports pundit claimed that the Bayern central defender made a ‘sloppy mistake’.

“Great play from Vinicius Jnr. It’s a penalty. What is he (Kim) playing at by issuing a challenge like that?

“It doesn’t matter what level you play at. Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, will cost you,” he added.

“It was the lifeline Real Madrid needed. Nice ball from Vini Jnr. Nice poke ball to Rodrygo.

“But why does (Kim) make the decision to tackle? Eric Dier is the sweeper behind him!

Reflecting on Bayern’s failure to close out the game, McManaman later said: “Kim had a night to forget at this level. Can he turn it on again next week at the Bernabeu?

It was Vinicius Jnr’s excellent pass to Rodrygo that forced Kim to make the tackle, with Glenn Hoddle praising the Brazilian for the excellent ball that forced the defender to pull Rodrygo to the ground.

“Vinicius is doing really well here and it’s like he’s coming into the box saying ‘knock me down’,” Hoddle told TNT Sports.

“But what a nice little ball (to Rodrygo). Because the balloon is so cute it put Kim on the wrong side. He tried to make the tackle but it was an easy decision for the referee. Once again, it’s a nailed penalty. But what a lovely ball from Vinicius.

Hoddle also gave his verdict on Vinicius Jnr’s opening goal, saying Kim got too close to the Real Madrid striker, allowing the Brazilian to collect the ball and burst through it to go one-on-one with Manuel Neuer in the net.

Hoddle said: “From Kim’s point of view, when an attacker moves away from you to do some sort of dummy run, you’re not sprinting, you’re moving in stages.

“He never did it, he made one run and got caught very quickly. Then the ball goes behind and Vinicius completely did it.

Owen Hargreaves added of the opening goal: “I think Kim came in today and was just trying to be a bit too aggressive. We see a lot of defenders trying to press and be very aggressive – sometimes they stay motionless.

“I think when he looks at the game, the first goal is so avoidable. I just think they will look at that and think we just need to go to Madrid and fix our mistakes.
