Steve Kerr reshuffles Warriors coaching staff with two new additions – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Warriors coach Steve Kerr arrived last week with two vacancies on his staff. Both spots were officially filled Monday, with veteran coach Terry Stotts and former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse joining Golden State.

The two players are expected to join Kerr on the bench, with Kris Weems remaining on the team and occupying the third and final spot, according to multiple league sources. Weems was promoted to the bench last summer after Jama Mahlalela accepted a position with the Toronto Raptors.

The additions allow longtime assistant Bruce “Q” Fraser, known primarily for his close work with team superstar Stephen Curry, to return to the second bench after three seasons at forward.

Stotts, 66, has 13 years of head coaching experience, including nine seasons most recently with the Portland Trail Blazers. After two seasons away from the NBA, he returned last summer as an assistant to first-year coach Adrian Griffin with the Milwaukee Bucks. Discord between the two led Stotts to resign a week before the season began.

Stotts now fills the head assistant position left vacant last week when Kenny Atkinson accepted the head coaching job with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stackhouse, 49, is a two-time All-Star who transitioned to coaching after retiring in 2013. He spent three seasons coaching with the Raptors, the last two as head coach of their G League team. He then spent one year (2018-19) as an assistant to J.B. Bickerstaff with the Memphis Grizzlies before leaving to become the head coach at Vanderbilt. He spent five seasons with the Commodores but was fired after they finished 9-23 last season.

Stackhouse’s place on the team was created by the sudden death of assistant Dejan “Deki” Milojević in February. Milojević, who worked almost exclusively with Golden State’s big men, was among the back-bench assistants.

Kerr initially didn’t plan on making any major personnel changes, but once it became clear that Atkinson was leaving, he decided to go with two coaches with previous head coaching experience.

With Stotts’ deep reservoir of experience and Stackhouse’s willing demeanor, the general reaction is that the Warriors should have a stronger personnel next season.
