A 37-year-old man was arrested in Crown Street at 10.40am yesterday before being taken into custody.

The man who was taken to Wollongong police station was later charged with murder.

He was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court today.

Earlier, officers and detectives from the Homicide Squad established a crime scene in the area and established Strike Force Alleppo to investigate the man’s death.

Station staff reportedly found the man’s body on the first level, near the west side of the car park, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The area is known for being frequented by people who sleep on the streets.

Forensic experts scoured the scene for evidence as detectives began their investigation into the alleged incident.

Pastor Josh Hammann said residents were shocked by the scene after a convoy of police cars arrived on the street.

“We understand that something really sad has happened,” he told ABC.
