State police investigate the deadly double in Frederick County
(New Market, MD) – Maryland state police are continuing an investigation into a double accident in fatal traffic this afternoon in Frederick.
The deceased victims were passengers in a box truck involved in the accident. The two were pronounced deceased on the scene by the staff of the emergency medical services. Identification is awaiting the notification of parents.
At 4:10 p.m. today, soldiers from the Frederick barracks were sent to a traffic accident reported near the 62 exit on the I-70 in New Market. The preliminary survey indicates the driver of a BMW SUV, traveling west on the I-70 before Route 75, at the back of a box truck. The box truck subsequently traveled through the central median and hit a tractor trailer. The tractor tractor trail was moving east on the I-70.
The box truck and the tractor trailer were propelled into the wood line adjacent to the I-70 in the east direction and caught fire. The drivers of the two vehicles were controlled by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
The BMW driver remained on the scene and refused medical treatments. The two passengers of the BMW were transported by ground to the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.
The tracks in the eastern direction and in western direction of the I-70 between Route 75 and Route 27 remain closed. Maryland state police and Frederick County fire and rescue staff remain on the scene. Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration staff are on the scene to help closure of roads and detours. The state lawyer’s office in Frederick’s county was informed of the incident.
Due to the severity of the accident and injuries, the Maryland state police accident team responded to investigate. The cause and the contributory factors involved in this accident remain under investigation. All possible causes are taken into account.
The investigation continues.
