British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government was ready to use industrial policy to mitigate the impact of the Trump administration had just imposed, adding that all options are taken into account in Britain’s response.
“We are ready to use industrial policy to help shelter British affairs from The Storm,” said Starmer in an editorial published late Saturday in the Telegraph.
“Some people may feel uncomfortable about … the idea that the state should intervene directly,” admitted the Prime Minister. “But we just can’t hang on to old feelings when the world is running so quickly,” he said.
Starmer has promised “turbocharge” is planning to improve the country’s competitiveness this week.
On Wednesday, the United States imposed a reference rate of 10% on all British imports, scutting up the first hopes that the country could obtain an exemption from the pricing campaign of US President Donald Trump.
In his editorial, Starmer said that “the immediate priority is to stay calm and fight for the best offer”, adding that all the options are always on the table.
The leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, supported the policy of the British government, saying on Sky that not rippling “in the first answer is the right thing to do”.
“Reprisal rates degenerate commercial wars,” said Badenoch.
