Starfield drops to mostly negative user review status on Steam

I hope you had a great vacation, because a certain open-world space RPG certainly didn’t. From December 25, 2023, Star Field had received enough reviews on Steam to push its user review status into “Mostly Negative” territory. It’s a shocking fall for such a high-profile title from one of the most famous developers of the modern era.

Announced in 2018, Star Field saw anticipation remain quite high in the years leading up to its September 2023 release. The first original license from popular developer Bethesda in decades, fans of the studio’s sprawling open-world games were eager to embark on an epic space opera featuring over 1,000 explorable planets. However, in the months since the game’s launch, Star Field has faced widespread criticism from fans and media for its shallow narrative offerings, the segmented, loading-screen-gated presentation of its galaxy, and the feeling that there simply isn’t much to do besides wandering around barren, albeit pretty, planets. That disappointment has now turned into a disastrous reception at the world’s most popular and largest showcase for PC gaming.

Star Field had already started to struggle on Steam in recent weeks, landing at its previous lowest status of “Mixed” around November. During this time, the game had seen a lot people are moving away from its galactic offerings; a trend that might be common to other open-world single-player games, but is notable in Star FieldThis is the case since Bethesda and Microsoft insisted that it was made to be played consistently and for years to come.

People on the r/Starfield subreddit took note of the declining review status around Christmas, when the game received an influx of 245 negative reviews on Steam. “CyberpunkThe revival of ‘certainly didn’t help,’ one comment read, followed by a mention of Baldur’s Gate 3which won Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards (Star Fieldnotably, received only one nomination and won no awards).

Star Field Steam Reviews: “Just Buy Cyberpunk

One of the top Steam reviews of the game currently reads: “Simply buy Cyberpunk.” Other fans drew direct comparisons to other Bethesda games: “Don’t play after Skyrim Or Fallout 4 Or Fallout: New Vegas Or Fallout 3 (…) You will be so (disappointed).” Another review describes the game as a “excess of nothingness. An open-world RPG that’s so packed with meaningless content that the seams start to split and the empty calories spill out.

Negative Steam Reviews there is nothing new for Star Field. Previously, Bethesda had started to respond officially to individual reviews on the platform after the game achieved an overall rating of “Mixed”.

Star Field should receive new features and updates until 2024, as “new ways of traveling”. Bethesda has stated its goal of providing such updates every six weeks, starting in February.

Will these updates be enough to turn around fans’ opinions? Well, in a world where Cyberpunk 2077 literally won an award for succeeding in his actionThis is not entirely implausible.
