The St Kitts and Nevis coast guard discovered 13 decaying bodies in a drifting boat off the coast, a few days after five bodies were found in a skiff near Trinidad and Tobago.
Officials from the two Caribbean countries said it was not immediately clear if there was a link between the two incidents, or who were the deceased.
Cromwell Henry, assistant police commissioner of St Kitts and Nevis, said that the 13 organizations found on Wednesday were in an advanced state of decomposition. He could not give the age or sex of the victims.
The boat without captain was towed on the shore and an investigation opened.
On Saturday, a similar call led to discover a skiff with five dead aboard Trinidad and Tobago, about 1,200 km (750 miles).
This ship was in a poor state and sank while towing on the island, officials said.
A declaration from the Trinidadian coastal guard noted a “striking resemblance” between the ship found on Saturday and another discovered nearby in 2021 which contained the remains of 15 people.
It was supposed that this boat had derived from the African coast with migrants on board.
