Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s brother resigns from Parliament

Basil Rajapaksa succeeded his brother Mahinda who resigned as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka last month.

The Sri Lankan president’s brother and the country’s former finance minister, Basil Rajapaksa, said on Thursday he had resigned from parliament, the second in the influential family to step down from government amid a severe economic crisis.

“As of today, I will not be involved in any government activity, but I cannot and do not want to step away from politics,” Rajapaksa told reporters.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s older brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned as prime minister last month after prolonged protests over the economic crisis proved deadly.

Mahinda remains a member of parliament.
