Sri Lankan navy arrests 12 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing in its waters

As many as 12 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been arrested by the Sri Lankan navy for allegedly fishing in its waters, a fisheries official said on Sunday.

A boat was also seized.

The fishermen were fishing near Katchatheevu on Saturday evening when they were apprehended by the Lankan navy, the official said.

MP for Ramanathapuram, K Nawas Kani, raised the issue with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This is the third time since March 29 that the Lankan Navy has arrested Indian fishermen for alleged violation of maritime borders. A total of seven fishermen were apprehended on Tuesday and Thursday. Two boats used by fishermen were also seized.
