Spring 2023 Preview: Wilmington High School Tennis

The 2023 season will be a bit of an unknown one for Wilmington High School tennis coach Steve Reed.
“With four players coming to college who have never played the sport before, we just need some time on the pitch,” he said. “We have smart, athletic players who will be good tennis players once they get the time.”
Reed, in his 23rd season as a tennis coach at Wilmington, is once again assisted by Doug Cooper. Reed has a 217-128 record.
There are three returning winners on the team – Alex Lazic, Trey Reed and Asher Fudge. Lazic was the No. 2 All-SBAAC team and No. 1 singles player. Reed was second in singles and Fudge was second in doubles.
Due to the timing of this posting, Reed hasn’t had any new arrivals that will impact the team.
“We have 12 young men coming to play tennis for the first time,” Reed said. “They bring a lot of energy to the opening of the courts. Alex and Trey return with a college bachelor experience that will be of great help.
Fourth in the SBAAC regular season and the league tournament last season, Wilmington will be solid atop the singles court with Lazic and Reed. To win the U.S. Division Championship, Reed said the doubles teams will have to do their part.
“We’ll have to win the doubles courts to have a chance, a big challenge with new players but they can do it,” Reed said.
For now, Reed just wants his team to ‘get better every day’.
