Spotify increases the subscription price in France by 1.2% to align with the new tax on music streaming

Spotify has increased the price of its premium subscription in France by €0.13 in response to a tax on music streaming imposed by the government earlier this year.

At €11.12 per month for an individual subscription, the new price is 1.2% higher than the previous amount – the same as the 1.2% levy that France imposed on music streaming companies, including Deezer, Apple, Google and Spotify, starting in January. 1 this year. The 1.2% increase applies to all of Spotify’s subscription plans, including student, family, and duo.

France introduced this new levy as a way to support the country’s music sector, and the proceeds from this tax will be directed to the National Music Center (CNM), created four years ago.

In response, Spotify revealed late last year that it was withdrawing financial support from local French music festivals, including Les Francofolies de la Rochelle and Printemps de Bourges. The company also announced that it would increase prices in France, without revealing the amount. In a statement provided to TechCrunch at the time, Spotify said the move was intended to offset the costs of this tax. It is therefore not surprising that the new price corresponds exactly to that of the levy.

Although the increase is unlikely to force consumers to abandon their premium subscriptions, the move now places France among the most expensive countries in the Eurozone for Spotify.
