SPORTING AGENDA: Stars set to lock themselves in the stands after squad’s Euro expansion… while Man City officials may not have to worry about a possible clash with Barry Manilow at Co-op Live

The increase in team sizes at the Euros from 23 to 26 could see players move straight from the stands to the pitch.

In a move authorized by Gareth Southgate, nations will now be able to name up to 15 replacements.

However, it is understood that the benches on the German field were built assuming there would be 12 submarines – and there is not enough time to install bigger ones.

This means some stars may have to sit close to punters, with extra seats already planned.

Nations have also been informed by UEFA that changing rooms will be prepared assuming teams will consist of 23 players, so they might feel a little cramped.

The benches at the German stadium for Euro 2024 were designed for 12 substitutes and not 15.

Premier League warns clubs against pitch invasions

The Premier League wrote to clubs before the end of the season warning them to be on guard against the prospect of pitch invasions.

The League has shared a document titled ‘Pitch Protection Best Practice Guide’ which sets out the do’s and don’ts at a time when fans of many clubs traditionally storm the playing field.

Clubs have been asked to monitor social media in real time during matches as fans have previously orchestrated online invasions.

The sprint marshals, whose introduction was revealed by Mail Sport, have been instructed to face the field at all times so they can run to intercept any invaders.

Clubs have also been reminded to ensure they have the necessary tools to deal with protesters who attempt to attach themselves to the goal posts.

Man City’s final day clash with Barry Manilow concert

Diary readers may recall that Manchester City faced the prospect of a final day clash with a Barry Manilow concert at the new Co-op Live arena, built in the shadow of the stadium Etihad.

However, one of the few positives from the total debacle that saw the concert hall’s opening repeatedly delayed is that those responsible may no longer have to worry.

The veteran crooner says he has a “back-up plan” – namely a meeting at the nearby AO Arena – if the situation isn’t resolved by May 19.

Take That and rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie have already moved to the AO Arena after various problems at the £356 million new build, a joint venture between Americans Oak View Group, City and One Direction star Harry Styles .

Sheikh Ahmad al Sabah suspended from IOC

Former “sporting kingmaker”, Sheikh Ahmad al Sabah, will be suspended from his mandate as a member of the International Olympic Committee for 15 years following his conviction by Swiss courts for fraud and deception.

A letter from the IOC seen by Reuters confirms the decision, which was made for breach of ethics.

This development represents a huge disgrace for the powerful Kuwaiti, who, only eight years ago, was tipped to be the future president of the IOC or FIFA.

However, if IOC President Thomas Bach thinks this will mean the end of Ahmad’s political manipulation of world sport, he is sadly mistaken. Ahmad will now be able to operate in the shadows with nothing to lose.

Sky Sport’s surprising cricket deal

It was interesting to see Sky Sports take the feed straight from Lancashire for their County Championship clash with Kent at Old Trafford.

It is understood the broadcaster struck a deal with the county where it would use the footage and provide its own commentators and graphics.

Agenda understands that the Lancs were not paid to provide the stream but are free to use the final product on their YouTube channel.

Given the extra leeway given to counties by the ECB, some see it as a potential means of generating revenue at a time when certain areas of domestic cricket are rarely televised.

The BBC, which often defends its northern credentials following its move to Salford, held a breakfast with journalists, director general Tim Davie and head of content Charlotte Moore to mark the launch of what it called “BBC Summer of Sport 2024”.

Davie, Moore and on-screen presenters will preview coverage of Wimbledon, the Euros and the Olympics at Wednesday’s party. The place? Shaftesbury Avenue, central London.
