Sport News Italian star questioned after placing top three at Ballon d’Or with Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski

Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho is unlikely to be among the top three in the Ballon d’Or vote as he is not the best player for his club or country.

That’s the perspective of talkSPORT host Darren Bent, who added to the debate over some startling results in the vote for the best player in the game.

Jorginho has certainly had the best year in terms of silverware, winning two of football’s biggest prizes

The midfielder continued his Champions League success with a Euro 2020 victory

The Ballon d’Or is considered football’s most prestigious individual award, and Lionel Messi won his record-breaking seventh trophy in a year in which he won the Copa America with Argentina.

Many were surprised that Robert Lewandowski failed to push PSG to win the award after two years of unprecedented goals with Bayern Munich, but Bent was equally shocked to find out who stepped onto the podium.

Jorginho reached third place on the list, achieving huge success by winning Euro 2020 with Italy and the Champions League with Chelsea.

“He is not Chelsea’s best player and he is not the best player in the Italian team,” said Bent.

Did Donnarumma deserve to be higher because of his winning performances at Euro 2020?

“He’s just part of two very good teams, does that make him the third best player in the world?

The midfielder’s metronome was joined in the last 30 by a number of his club and international teammates, including N’Golo Kante, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Mason Mount and Giorgio Chiellini.

Despite his splendid form since moving to Stamford Bridge from Napoli for £ 50million in 2018, Bent believes a number of other candidates should have been in the top three.

Co-host Ally McCoist said his first three would have been Lewandowski followed by Messi and Mohamed Salah, and Bent asked him if Jorginho would make it.

Nevertheless Jorginho was delighted with his placement

“No! Maybe it’s a little tough because Jorginho has had a fantastic year,” said McCoist.

“But I think the difference with Jorginho is that he has had a wonderful season playing with two wonderful teams and had great success.

“I’m not sure his game, however brilliant, deserves the World Footballer of the Year.”
