Steven Gerrard is expected to oversee his 50th European game as Rangers boss when his side take on European giants Lyon.

The Liverpool legend has an impressive record of 25 wins, 16 draws and eight defeats in Europe since becoming manager of the Gers in 2018.

Rangers missed their Champions League qualification

Rangers were knocked out of the Europa League in the round of 16 last season and know that a winning start to competition will be vital if they are to replicate that feat.

But the Light Blues face a difficult test when they host the Ligue 1 team from Lyon.

Rangers v Lyon: Kick-off date and time

This Europa League Group A meeting is due to take place on Thursday, September 16.

It takes place at Ibrox in Glasgow and the kick-off is at 8 p.m.

The Rangers will then travel to the Czech Republic to face Sparta Prague on Thursday, September 30, before hosting Brondby on October 21.

The home side will be without defender Filip Helander “for the foreseeable future” after having surgery for a knee problem this week.

But the Gers received a boost when they learned that Connor Goldson will be making his comeback after being forced into self-isolation.

Ianis Hagi is still in his home country of Romania after testing positive for Covid-19 while on international service, however, Allan McGregor is expected to replace Jon McLaughlin in the goal.

For Lyon, former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele will miss the opportunity to rekindle his rivalry with Rangers after suffering a muscle injury.

He joined Leo Dubois, Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, Thiago Mendes and Tino Kadewere unable to be part of the traveling team for the French side.

But another old Celtic Jason Denayer will line up for Lyon and Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta are also available.

And former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri made the trip despite reports that the Swiss were absent due to vaccination issues.

Steven Gerrard: “They are without doubt the best.

“As a whole, Lyon is really a Champions League team with players of Champions League caliber.

“He’s been here before, he knows what we’re doing, so it’s a real big test tomorrow and there’s no doubt that we have to be at our best and that goes for both sides of the game.

“We have to have a high level of focus and focus tomorrow because if you don’t play against these teams you can get punished and punished very quickly, so it’s a real good test and challenge.

“But we have to have our own confidence and belief that we can play at this level, we can compete and at the right times during the game we have to be courageous that we can also hurt the opposition.

“We’re excited, we’re looking forward to it, but we know the scale of the challenge and it’s arguably the biggest we’ve had as a group.”
