Sport News Fantasy Football 2021 TE consistency rankings: find potential sleepers, busts in tight leaderboards

Sports news

Every fantasy football owner strives to be consistent, but it’s still difficult to master. Winning big one week and narrowly losing the next is usually not how a team positions themselves to win a fantastic league, so having reliable players who give you a base point amount each week should be a goal. Anyone who’s played fantasy football for a while knows how infuriating it is to have, say, a tight end who comes out for over 20 points one week and follows him with three the next. The lack of bankable TEs beyond the highest level of the leaderboard makes this a difficult position for most owners to write.

You can’t control injury or weather, among other things, but you can control how well you factor past (and projected) consistency into your player ratings.

At BigGuyFantasySports.com, we strive to help fantasy owners find more consistency during the draft and throughout the season with our ‘Clutch Report’ section. Based on your scoring format and the number of teams in your league, we determine the Clutch Factor (CF) that a player must exceed each week to win a Clutch Game. For example, in 12-team PPR formats, a running back needs more than 11 fantastic points per week to win a “clutch game”.

PPR FANTASY 2021 RANKS:
quarterback | Back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Kick | First 200

From this, a player’s “Clutch Rating” (CR) is determined. A CR of 70% or more means a player is very consistent. Elite players will normally have a CR of between 80% and 90%.

STANDARD FANTASY 2021 RANKS:
quarterback | Back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Kick | First 200

The most consistent players aren’t always the top scorers – at least, not in order of arrival by total points – but the lack of performance below five points is arguably more valuable. Knowing can help you on draft day. Here’s a look at my top 12 consistency-based rankings for TEs heading into the 2021 season.

2021 FANTASY CONSISTENCY ASSESSMENTS:
quarterback | Back | Wide receiver

A TE1A ranking means I would expect this player to earn at least 70% CR in 2021. You can probably guess who the three TEs are currently in this tier: Travis Kelce, Darren Waller and George Kittle. The remaining nine “TE1s” are all classified as TE1B. Their CRs should be between 55 and 70%. Obviously, the top-ranked tight ends like Mark Andrews and TJ Hockenson are expected to earn a lot more than 55%, but they probably won’t go over 70%. Lower ranked tight ends might exceed a 55% CR, but that’s less likely.

The big question for this year: Can Travis Kelce live up to his extremely high ADP? The answer is categorically “yes”. His resistance numbers last year put him in the top three wide receivers. So drafting it in the first round is not a stave. You can always write consistent, dumped receivers later to fill the void.

Let’s take a look at a few of these tight ends and see which of them are undervalued or overvalued based on current ADPs.

FANTASY SLEEPING 2021:
quarterback | Back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Each team

Undervalued: Robert Tonyan, Packers

Tonyan came out of nowhere to take the fantasy world by storm. He was fourth for total points and seventh for consistency, and like Logan Thomas, he’s not getting the respect he deserves. His current ADP is TE13 in round 12. I would easily draft Thomas and Tonyan in round 7 and 12 and would be very happy with my tight position.

Overrated: Hunter Henry, Patriots

There was a ton of excitement when the Patriots signed Jonnu Smith this offseason. However, that excitement waned considerably when the Patriots also signed Henry. Both are extremely talented, and while visions of Patriot TE double domination from years past dance through our heads, it’s still Cam Newton at quarterback, not Tom Brady. I’m outside. Henry’s current ADP is much higher than my TE19 rating of him. It’s definitely a solid save, but I’m not sure I can make this my TE1.

2021 FANTASY LEVELS AND DRAFT STRATEGY:
quarterback | Back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST

Factoring in consistency in your Draft Day decisions can help you avoid the curse of being the highest scoring team with a losing record. You need to make the playoffs to win a championship, and having a stable squad is the best way to accomplish both.
