Sport News Erling Haaland is not Pep Guardiola’s style

Manchester City’s pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer shows Pep Guardiola could be ready for a change of style, amid new ties with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

Prior to his eventual transfer to former club and local City rivals Manchester United, Ronaldo was reportedly set to join Guardiola at the Etihad.

Man City reportedly almost signed Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of move to Man Utd

Many were skeptical of the deal – partly because it would join rivals United – but also because it doesn’t necessarily match the kind of No.9 Guardiola usually enjoys playing with.

However, the fact that he allegedly made a move to sign the Portuguese icon could imply that he is willing to adapt – as Haaland doesn’t fit the bill either.

The Norwegian, who has already scored seven goals in five games this season, is available for £ 64million when a release clause in his contract becomes active.

Erling Haaland is set to leave Dortmund next summer

And, having lost Sergio Aguero to Barcelona earlier this year, the current Premier League champions are on the hunt for a new striker.

Guardiola has used various midfielders as a ‘false nine’ so far this campaign, but if the Spaniard decides he wants a full-fledged center-forward next season, European football expert Lars Sivertsen sees the meaning of a decision for Haaland.

“There is a lot of logic in a potential move to Man City. They have the money,” he told talkSPORT.

Pep Guardiola has played several players as a ‘false nine’ this season

“They have what they always call ‘the sporting project’ which means it’s a club that you can reasonably expect to be able to win a lot of trophies.

“He’s also a club that needs him – they need a center-forward so that makes a lot of sense, although he’s not immediately a Pep Guardiola-type player, in what we can. traditionally seen as the type of players Guardiola enjoys working with.

“The word is that they had seriously considered signing Cristiano Ronaldo. So maybe Pep Guardiola is ready to work with slightly different types of players than he has historically done.
