A great moment calls for a bold move. Hire Kevin O’Connell to coach the Broncos. – Denver Post

General manager George Paton’s grand plan to lead the Broncos back to Super Bowl glory is working perfectly until quarterback Aaron Rodgers says no.

All of Paton’s searches, 10 candidate interviews and all frequent flyer miles will count as less than zero unless the Broncos also land a top-flight quarterback.

So what’s your QB plan, Mr. Paton?

This is the crucial question that every candidate coach, from Dan Quinn to Eric Bieniemy, absolutely had to ask during the interview process. If Paton didn’t have a rock-solid answer, any candidate who isn’t truly desperate for a job and fully prepared to suffer the same sad fate as Vance Joseph and Vic Fangio in Denver should just say no to the Broncos. .

If Paton is 100% confident he can make a trade with Green Bay for Rodgers before the 2022 NFL season kicks off, any of his 10 candidates can go up to the shotgun with A- Rod all the way to the playoffs.

The NFL game is run by elite quarterbacks. Unlike college football, coaching the team is secondary.

As Fangio has asked me more than once: Although Mike Shanahan is known as the mastermind, how many playoff games has Shanny won in 20 seasons as head coach while his lead quarterback wasn’t John Elway?

The answer? One.

(Thanks, Jake Plummer. Why Shanahan dumped Jake the Snake for Jay Cutler remains a mystery.)

If the experience of learning from mistakes really matters in the NFL, it defies logic why Quinn is the only former head coach on Paton’s list of candidates, unless that search was never truly open and that the general manager has always been strongly inclined to hire his long-time friend.

If Quinn really was the prohibitive favorite on the jump, while the other nine interviews were set up to get information from hit league rivals and satisfy the demands of the Rooney rule, hopefully the search committee will have at least pressed time for a walk on Manhattan Beach and ribs at Oklahoma Joe’s on his whirlwind tour of America.
