South County residents recovering after possible tornado last night

CRESTWOOD, Mo–St. Louis area residents are recovering from severe weather that hit the South County area last night.

A retaining wall collapsed near the new Dierberg at Crestwood at Sappington and Watson. That’s about two and a half miles from where FOX 2 severe weather specialist Chris Higgins captured video in Sappington last night.

Higgins said it may have been a tornado, possibly an EF-1 or low end EF-2 tornado.

It caused damage to homes in the area and he found a carport collapsed on top of a car.

The gutters of a neighboring house were damaged and debris littered the yards of several houses in the neighborhood.

The force of the wind lifted the canopy of a bridge into the air and fell it back to the ground. There’s all kinds of damage in yards all over South St. Louis

About a mile down Yeager Road, there are entire trees down and large tree branches scattered around. Several area residents who were at home described what happened when the possible tornado touched down.

“Very heavy rain, you couldn’t see the car in front of you and the trees were blowing and branches were everywhere. He was having trouble getting around all the branches,” said Phyllis Diehl, a victim of last night’s storm.
