Liam Coen informed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night that he would take the Jaguars coaching job, told ESPN’s Jenna Laine, a move that came a day after he broke off talks with Jacksonville.
Coen, the 39-year-old offensive coordinator who helped guide Baker Mayfield to a career-best season with the Bucs in 2024, will replace the fired Doug Pederson.
On Wednesday, Coen was scheduled for an in-person interview with Jaguars owner Shad Khan, general manager Trent Baalke and others, but he took himself out of the running for the job and instead agreed to stay in Tampa on a deal that would have made him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL, sources previously told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hours later, the Jaguars and Baalke went their separate ways. And then on Thursday, Coen was back with Jacksonville, which led to him taking the job.
The Buccaneers had the third-ranked total offense in the NFL and finished fourth in points scored this season in Coen’s first year as the team’s offensive coordinator.
The Jaguars are looking for a new head coach after firing Pederson following a 4-13 season.
