‘Sound of Freedom’ beats Disney’s ‘Indiana Jones 5’ by millions on 2,000 fewer screens on July 4

The sound of freedomthe anti-child trafficking drama starring Jim Caviezel, became the No. 1 film on July 4, surpassing Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate while playing on far fewer screens.

In the final count, The sound of freedom grossed $14.2 million from 2,634 screens when it opened on July 4, for a strong per-screen average of $5,407, according to data from BoxOfficeMojo.com.

India 5 collected $11.7 million from 4,600 screens that day, reaching a per-screen average of $2,543.

The irony is that the Walt Disney Co. has set aside The sound of freedom when it acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019. (Fox was to distribute the film.)

It took producer Eduardo Verastegui nearly three years to unravel The sound of freedom from the hands of Disney and raising the funds to release it through Angel Studios.

The sound of freedom received a strong social media push from conservative influencers as well as endorsements from Mel Gibson and Gary Sinise, who are not involved in the film. There was also a “pay it forward” effort, which allowed ticket buyers to buy seats for others who might not be able to afford them.

Based on the life and career of Tim Ballard, The sound of freedom stars Jim Caviezel as a Homeland Security agent who quits his job in order to bring child traffickers to justice. Oscar winner Mira Sorvino, who urged her Twitter followers to see the film, stars as his wife, Katherine.

India 5 is shaping up to be the latest box office fiasco from beleaguered Disney. The stock fell short of its already deflated five-day projection of $85 million, grossing just $82 million domestically.

Overseas ticket sales are also low due to lackluster reviews and low levels of fan enthusiasm.
