Sony to destroy its PlayStation PC expansion before starting with PSN requirement

I have no idea what exactly is going on at Sony, but the company’s recent expansion into PC gaming seems to be going off the rails.

First, we had the issue where Helldivers 2 was going to require PSN accounts for all players on Steam, which players didn’t want to have to create, or in 177 regions players weren’t even allowed to create an account PSN, meaning they would lose access to the game they had already paid for and invested tens or hundreds of hours into.

While Sony reversed the PSN decision for current players after huge resistance from players, they still haven’t reversed the decision that the game can no longer be sold in those 177 regions. Those who Already The game can apparently keep it, but it looks like there won’t be any new sales unless something happens soon.

But that’s not all. In the same week or so, Sony also found itself in a situation with Ghost of Tsushima, where the single-player game also offers a much smaller multiplayer mode in the package. But again, there will be a PSN requirement because part of the game is online, and now the game is not on sale in, you guessed it, regions where you can’t create a PSN account .

While some advocates are right to point out that yes, other companies require you to create an account to play their games, from EA to Ubisoft to Microsoft, the situation is different because Sony has a very large number countries where this is not possible, which goes well beyond what we see most of the time from these other publishers. As a result, this means significant restrictions in many parts of the world, leading to loss of sales, loss of microtransaction spending, and more.

It’s unclear why Sony hasn’t created some sort of PlayStation account tier that can be accessed from anywhere and it’s not the type of PSN account these gamers can’t have. Now, Steam is actively issuing Ghost of Tsushima refunds to regions that have already purchased the game, but now have this new requirement. I’m willing to bet that if Helldivers 2’s push hadn’t been canceled, Steam would have refunded all of those copies as well, resulting in lost revenue and millions of angry players.

Sony is right in its desire to expand beyond PlayStation consoles and into PCs. Helldivers 2 wouldn’t have the numbers it has without its huge launch on PC. But whatever is happening with this PSN requirement, it is botched game after game and Sony needs to figure it out quickly.
