Amid the continued success of its third installment, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog The feature film franchise has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office. Based on the Sega video game, the first two pictures were released in February 2020 and April 2022 respectively, grossing a total of $725.2 million worldwide. The trio, released domestically on December 20 and expanded overseas starting December 25, has grossed over $312 million to date, bringing the current franchise total to over $1.037 billion.
Each of the films was directed by Jeff Fowler. The first two films generated $181 million in consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and purchases. Last April, spin-off series Joins debuted on Paramount+, earning over 11 million total hours in its first 28 days of streaming, making it the #1 kids and family series in terms of hours on the platform.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earned an “A” CinemaScore and has a franchise-best 86% from Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a franchise-best 96% from Verified Hot Popcornmeter. The film rose to No. 1 domestic, then debuted to the franchise’s biggest international box office, with just 84 percent of the offshore footprint in the mix.
At constant scope, including previews, on the same group of markets, this result is 83% ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The film also reached $100 million at the international box office faster than its predecessors.
The latest film features the return of the original cast, including Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Also starring Ben Schwartz, Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Alyla Browne and James Wolk with James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves.
The screenplay is by Pat Casey & Josh Miller and John Whittington, with a story by Pat Casey & Josh Miller. The producers are Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno.
Paramount recently announced that development of a fourth feature film is underway.
