Social Security chief Martin O’Malley outlines plans to rebuild struggling agency

Martin O’Malley, former Baltimore mayor, two-term governor of Maryland and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, is in his fifth month as commissioner of the Social Security Administration.

He took the reins of an agency that hasn’t had a Senate-confirmed leader since July 2021 — and has struggled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic to provide basic customer service while its staff of 55 000 people fell to its lowest level in decades. The agency’s disability system can take more than a year to determine eligibility for basic benefits. And employee Morale is at an all-time low: only 52 percent of employees are satisfied with their jobs according to the latest “Best Places to Work in the Federal Government” survey.
