Southeast Texas was a winter wonderland Tuesday morning – a record-breaking paradise.
HOUSTON — In the days leading up to the snowfall we saw Monday night through Tuesday, we looked at the days in the Houston area with the highest snowfall totals.
So how does this snowfall add up to the Bayou City’s snowiest snow days? Let’s take a look.
On February 14, 1895, the Houston area recorded 20 inches of snow. We won’t make it this time…not even close, so this record is safe. But if we look at some of the other snowfall totals, the one we’re currently experiencing has a chance.
Here are the others, registered at Hobby Airport:
- February 12, 1960: 4.4 inches
- January 30, 1949: 3.1 inches
- January 22, 1940: 2.8 inches
- January 11, 1973: 2.0 inches
Then in 2017, 2009 and 1968 we saw an inch of snow accumulation.
Meteorologist Chita Craft has been tracking snowfall totals in the area, and there are varying amounts around town, ranging from an inch to even six inches near Liberty. We saw a preliminary measurement from the National Weather Service at Hobby Airport of three inches. If this becomes the official reading, it would place this snowfall as the fourth highest of all time (so far)!

We’re tracking snowfall totals and will let you know how today compares to Houston’s snowfall history.
