Snow Emergency Declaration: The City of Philadelphia declares a snow emergency in Philadelphia, effective at 9 p.m. | Streets Department

PHILADELPHIA – Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, Managing Director Adam K. Thiel, Deputy Director General of the Office of Emergency Services Dominick MirelesAnd Kristin Del Rossi, Commissioner of the Department of Streets announce a snow emergency as of 9 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

When the city announces a snow emergency, it means vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes in Philadelphia. If your vehicle is moved during the snow emergency, call 215-686-SNOW to find it. Do not call 911.

“While the total amount of snow is not yet confirmed, it is necessary that our Streets Department and all other city departments be prepared to operate at the snow emergency level,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “We are always focused on the safety of our residents and all services are working 24/7 to ensure we are fully prepared. »

We are declaring this snow emergency because:

  • Forecast snow accumulation increased to 4 to 6 inches in parts of Philadelphia.
  • Northwest and Northeast Philadelphia will see more snow accumulation
  • Temperatures drop overnight, causing ice and snow accumulation
  • Once ice forms, it will be difficult to treat

Declaring a snow emergency will improve road safety by:

  • Clear snow from parking lanes on emergency routes to maximize roadway clearance
  • Activation of additional crews and vehicles to support snow operations
  • Starting at 9 p.m., crowds attending the Eagles game will be able to go home, reducing traffic on the roadways during plowing and snow removal operations.

Additional snow emergency activity includes:

  • PPA will offer a flat $5 parking rate in garages and lots to allow off-street parking
  • PPD to assist in towing parked vehicles off emergency routes

“Avoid unnecessary travel. Go slowly and be careful if you have to drive,” said Kristin Del Rossi, Commissioner, Streets Department. “The temperature will drop below zero on Sunday evening. Roads may become more icy. Please take care of our crews and trucks.

“In this cold and snowy weather, residents are reminded that radiators need space. Keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable and never plug them into an extension cord – plug them directly into a wall outlet,” said Jeffrey W. Thompson, Commissioner, Philadelphia Fire Department. “Residents can also help us by shoveling out fire hydrants in their neighborhood. »
