Small planes crashes on Long Island Sound near Tweed New Haven Airport

New Haven, Connecticut (WFSB) – The managers confirmed that a plane went into the sound of Long Island on Sunday morning.

At around 10:32 a.m., firefighters were deployed at Tweed New Haven airport for a plane report in the water.

Tweed confirmed that the plane was a piper Cherokee. They said the control tower had contacted the local authorities.

Officials said the plane pilot had declared an emergency when communicating with New York air traffic control and came from Bridgeport (BDR), but that their destination was not specified.

The plane went down and landed in the water near the Branford / Guilford region, the Branford fire service said.

The Coast Guard emergency teams, West Haven, East Haven, Guilford and Branford launched their boats to help.

The small plane was in the water six miles from New Haven in Branford waters, officials said.

The plane was completely overwhelmed in the water and had two people on board.

The two individuals were rescued by the American Coast Guard and were alert and aware.
