Slow applause for BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s transformation from K-Pop idol to rock star

BLACKPINK’s Lisa made her return to the music scene after a hiatus of almost two and a half years with her latest song Rock star. Interestingly, this is the first release of the album under his new label LLOUD. The music video, lasting two minutes and 48 seconds, showcases Lisa’s bold new hip-hop persona. Embracing his Thai roots, the K-pop idol delivers fierce English raps that reveal a new side of his artistic expression.

The music video, set in the streets of Bangkok, features Lisa moving through cityscapes solo and alongside dancers. In the music video, she sports a distinctive star-shaped backless crop top, in visual harmony with the single’s title.

Lyrically, Lisa emphasizes her evolution from conventional K-pop norms by saying, “Make your favorite singer wanna rap, baby, la, la, Lisa, can you teach me Japanese? This is my life, baby, I’m a rock star.”

ICYDK: Lisa made history by becoming the first female solo artist to win Best K-pop Artist at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards for her hit music video LalisaHer debut single album of the same name, released in September 2021, broke records by selling 736,000 copies in its first week in South Korea.

As Lisa comes back with Rock star marks her solo comeback, all of Blackpink’s members — Lisa, Jennie, Rose and Jisoo — last appeared together in the music video for their 2022 single Closewhich rose to the top of the Billboard Global 200 chart.
