Skyline High School graduation shooting in Oakland leaves 3 injured: police

Three people were shot and a suspect was arrested at a high school graduation ceremony in Oakland, California, authorities said.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) was dispatched to Skyline High School after a report of shots fired, the press release states.

When police arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were treated and transported to a local hospital, police said.

Police said the third shooting victim was found at a local hospital. All victims are expected to survive.

USA TODAY reached out to OPD for updated information but has not yet received a response.

Shooting stems from altercation

During the preliminary investigation, the department learned that while leaving the graduation ceremony on Thursday, two groups of people got into a fight. The fight took place in the school parking lot and began to escalate, police said.

As the argument continued, shots were fired and several people were injured, authorities said.

1 person arrested, several people detained

Investigators have arrested one person and detained several people in connection with the graduation shooting, police said.

Police said they were looking for other witnesses and other shooters present at the graduation.
