The words “skibidi”, “delulu” and “tradwife” arrive in a dictionary near you.
It is among the latest additions to the Cambridge dictionary of more than 6,000 new words and sentences in the past year, the publisher of the largest online dictionary in the world said on Monday.
These new inductions in the dictionary reflect the impact of the transmission of online culture on daily discourse.
“Internet culture change of English language”
Among the new entries are the terms Gen Z and Gen Alpha such as “Skibidi”, an absurd word popularized by the viral series Youtube Skibidi toilet “, Delulu,” abbreviation of delusions and “tradwife”, which describes women who adopt traditional gender roles on social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram.
The other additions include “Lewk”, a distinctive fashion look; “Inspo”, short for inspiration; And “Mouse Jiggler”, which involves someone who pretends to work while working at a distance.
The growing environmental concerns have led to the inclusion of “Forever Chemicals”, which refer to artificial substances that remain in the environment for years.
Colin McIntosh, Lexical Program Director at Cambridge Dictionary, told the AFP news agency that it was unusual to see words like “Skibidi” and “Delulu” enter the dictionary.
“We add that words where we think they will have power,” he said. “Internet culture changes the English language, and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the dictionary.”
