Dozens of people were injured after a ski lift collapsed at a Spanish resort, emergency services told CNN.
Around 30 people were injured in the incident, which occurred around 12 p.m. local time, in the ski resort of Astun in the Pyrenees, the Aragon civil protection press office told CNN.
Among the injured, ten people were transferred to hospital, two with “maximum priority” and two others “who require urgent care”, the press service said. There were no deaths, he added.
The ski lift is 15 meters high, the Spanish Civil Guard said in an article on X.
Part of its structure collapsed after one of its pulleys came loose, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported. When it fell, the ski lift chairs became destabilized, overturning some of them, RTVE said.
A video of the scene released by the Civil Guard shows dozens of people standing in the snow on a mountain, stuck there after the ski lifts broke down.
“It was as if a cable had come loose, the chairs had bounced and people had been thrown out,” a witness told RTVE.
Around 3 p.m. local time, all the people stranded by the collapse of the left ski slope were evacuated, announced the delegate of the Spanish government in Aragon, Fernando Beltrán Blazquez, stationed at X.
Spanish President Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked” by the news, adding that he had spoken to the president of Aragon to offer the support of the Spanish government.
“All our affection goes to the injured and their families,” Sanchez said.
