This year, a sixth rabid raccoon was found in the Amityville region, according to the health officials of the County of Suffolk.
The Suffolk County Health Services department reported that a sick raccoon was found in Amityville on May 10. The animal was then tested positive for rage.
The first case of rage in a raccoon this year was reported on January 28. Before 2025, the county of Suffolk had not pointed out a rabid raccoon since 2009.

Health officials say there have been human contacts or pets with the most recent raccoon that has a rage.
