Six people found dead at Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel in Bangkok | Travel News

Thai authorities said the six people involved in the killing were all foreigners. Investigations into their deaths are ongoing.

Six people have been found dead at an upscale Bangkok hotel, the Thai government said.

“Prime Minister (Srettha Thavisin) has ordered all agencies to take urgent measures to avoid any impact on tourism,” the Thai government said in a statement Tuesday.

In a separate statement, Thai police said the six people were all foreign nationals.

Police said they found the deceased at the Grand Hyatt Erawan after receiving a call from hotel staff at around 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT).

A police official also denied earlier reports in Thai media that the six people were killed in a shootout.

“There is no sign of shooting,” the official told Reuters, adding that Vietnamese nationals were among the dead.

The Grand Hyatt Erawan, which has more than 350 rooms, is located in a popular tourist area known for its luxury shopping and restaurants.

Tuesday’s incident comes as Thailand seeks to further promote its tourism sector, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

This is not the first time the country’s tourism sector has been rocked by such incidents. Last October, a shooting at a luxury shopping mall near the Hyatt Hotel killed two foreigners, prompting the government to take measures to improve confidence in tourism.

More than 28 million foreign tourists visited Thailand last year, spending 1.2 trillion baht ($33.3 billion) in the country, where other key sectors of the economy have been slow to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government expects 35 million foreign arrivals this year, thanks to longer stays and visa waivers for several nationalities.
