A forest fire in the counties of Inyo and Mono stimulated the evacuations Sunday evening as it spreads quickly in the middle of strong winds and low humidity.
The vegetation fire was reported at 2:11 p.m. on Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road north of Bishop, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire jumped on the highway and threatened “multiple structures”, said Cal Fire Bdu in a post over X around 4 pm “plane, heavy equipment and additional engines”.
The fire had burned at least 1,000 acres at 7:50 p.m., according to Cal Fire. The fire moved to “fast speed” in the east and northeast, according to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.
Strong winds and dry conditions hindered the air shooting. Several planes have been put to the ground due to “extreme turbulence”, according to Cal Fire Bdu.
The meteorological service has reported gusts of wind from 25 to 35 MPH with humidity relative to around 10%.
About 5:30 p.m., compulsory evacuations were in place for parts of the counties in northern Inyo and southeast of the Mono, including the wild zone of white mountains. Highway 6 has been closed.
An evacuation center was created at the Benton Community Center, 58869 Highway 120 in Benton, according to California Highway Patrol.
