Short of planes, American will suspend some flights to Spain

American Airlines will suspend some flights to Europe this spring due to a delay in getting new planes from Boeing

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines announced on Friday that it will suspend flights between Philadelphia and Madrid for a few weeks this spring due to delays in receiving new Boeing planes that have been plagued by production problems.

American said it will offer passengers on the road alternative travel arrangements in May and early June.

A spokeswoman for American said the airline still plans to offer “a strong international network this summer.”

US airlines and others have seen deliveries of new Boeing 787s delayed for much of the past two years as Boeing scrambled to convince the Federal Aviation Administration that it had fixed production issues on the twin-aisle jets. .

The FAA approved the resumption of deliveries earlier this month. American is expected to receive three of the planes this year.

Boeing said it was working with its customers, including Americans, on the delivery schedule and laments the impact on airline operations. A spokeswoman said Boeing was focused on working with suppliers and stabilizing production.

The US decision was reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.
