Shooting victim likely lied about assault, police say

Police investigating a shooting outside a National City mall early Thursday have determined that the 31-year-old victim actually shot himself, a police official said.

Someone called 911 to report a shooting on Highland Avenue near East 24th Street around 2:25 a.m. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the lower body, police Sgt. Mark Segal said. The man told officers he had been shot by someone.

He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where his condition is said to be stable. A handgun was recovered.

Investigators who looked into the incident determined the man shot himself in the head. That decision was based on evidence recovered at the scene, Segal said. He added that police spoke to a witness and also looked into whether surveillance video was available.

Segal said he did not know whether the gun was in the man’s pocket or his waistband at the time of the shooting. Investigators will determine whether charges should be filed in connection with the shooting, he added.
