Shooting involving multiple gunmen injures at least 6 adults on school campus in Oakland

OAKLAND — A shooting involving multiple gunmen on a school campus in Oakland injured at least six adults Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. at the King Estates school complex, shared by Rudsdale Newcomer and Bay Area Technology School (BayTech) at 8210 Fontaine St. in the Oak Knoll/Golf Links neighborhood of the city. The Sojourner Truth Independent Study e-learning program is also based there, but has no students on the site.

Witnesses told police a car pulled up on the school campus and three gunmen got out and opened fire, then drove off. Alameda County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Ray Kelly said the scene of the shooting was “no longer active.”

Journalist Katie Nielsen said police sources indicated it may have been a targeted shooting.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tweeted that all of the victims were adults and were being treated in hospitals. Of the six injured, at least two were in critical condition.

The students were evacuated from the school after a brief confinement. Parents were invited to meet their children at the United Lutheran Church at 8800 Fontaine Street.

Officers from the San Francisco branch of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to the shooting, the agency said.

The California Highway Patrol said it has closed the Keller Street off-ramps from eastbound and westbound Interstate Highway 580, which are right next to the filming location. There was no estimated reopening time and I-580 remained open.

Rudsdale Newcomer School serves the Oakland Unified School District and its website indicates that its students are recently arrived immigrants between the ages of 16 and 21 who fled their home country due to violence and instability. .

BayTech Charter School serves grades 6 through 12.
