Shooting at Detroit block party leaves 2 dead, 18 injured

A mass shooting left two people dead and 18 injured Sunday morning at a block party in Detroit’s notorious gang-plagued “Red Light” area, according to reports.

An unidentified 22-year-old man reportedly opened fire around 2:25 a.m. on the East Side, in an area dubbed the “Red Zone” by the local Seven Mile Bloods Street gang, according to Click On Detroit.

A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head and a 21-year-old man was shot in the back, the outlet reported.

Police said all of Sunday’s victims were between the ages of 17 and 28.

One of them, a 17-year-old girl, is in critical condition, according to media reports. Thirteen others are in serious condition, while three are in stable condition, the media said.

Several of the victims are said to be undergoing surgery.

The man who opened fire was shot in the left leg and taken into custody, the media reported. He is hospitalized in stable condition.

The northeast Detroit neighborhood is one of the most dangerous in the city, according to Newsweek.

“The problem is the normality of these shootings,” Detroit Police Commissioner Ricardo Moore said, according to the Detroit News. “On January 1, the police will say crime is down, and then it will start all over again. Funeral homes, hospitals and florists are the only ones profiting from crime in Detroit.”

On June 1, four people were shot and killed at a large block party on the West Side, the Detroit News reported.

Just over a week earlier, a teenage girl was shot and killed at a separate party, just four blocks from the scene of Sunday’s massacre, the outlet added.

City police and Michigan State Police were still working at the scene Sunday to figure out what happened, Fox 2 Detroit said.

Michigan State Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
