The Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, announced the birth of their first child on Saturday.
“I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our beautiful healthy girl,” wrote Ohtani in an Instagram post. “To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous but super anxious parents.”
The Dodgers placed Ohtani on the MLB paternity list before their first series of series Friday evening against the Texas Rangers. Manager Dave Roberts said on Saturday’s match that he hoped that Ohtani would join the club for the final of the series on Sunday.
Ohtani can miss up to three games on paternity leave. The Dodgers have a day off on Monday, then play the Cubs in Chicago on Tuesday.
Ohtani, 30, posted on his Instagram account at the end of December that he and Tanaka, 28, a former professional basketball player from his native Japan, expected a baby in 2025.
